Places to See on a Short Trip to Prague With Kids

Prague is a beautiful city with plenty of family-friendly activities for kids. However, I must emphasize that the city suffers from over-tourism, which means crowds at the most famous landmarks.

Pro tip: Plan a walk in the early morning (5–6 am) to avoid big crowds and enjoy Prague's stunning architecture. You'll see Prague in a different light and enjoy the center almost all by yourself. Then, have breakfast in one of the small cafes in the city center. Your kids will be excited about this new experience!

Things to Do with Kids in Prague

#1 Prague Castle

Explore the largest ancient castle complex in the world (The Guinness Book of World Records.) Kids will be fascinated by the grandeur of the castle and the changing of the guards ceremony.

#2 Charles Bridge

Walk across the iconic Charles Bridge and enjoy the street performers, artists, and beautiful views of the Vltava River. This attraction tends to be overcrowded, so try coming early in the morning to explore the bridge and observe the fantastic Prague Castle in the rising sun.

#3 Petrin Hill 

Take a funicular ride up Petrin Hill and visit the Petrin Tower, a mini Eiffel Tower that offers stunning panoramic views of Prague. You can also explore the lovely Kinsky Garden located nearby.

Pro tip: The funicular ride is the one that kids truly enjoy. Just make sure to make it to the top of the hill, as there is one stop in the middle of the hill leading to the nearby restaurant.

#3 Prague Planetarium

The Prague Planetarium offers educational shows and programs about space and astronomy that can be entertaining and educational for kids.

Pro tip: The Planetarium itself is an excellent place to spend a rainy or chilly day, but if the weather is nice, take a walk in Stromovka Park, where the Planetarium is situated. Nearby, there are three lovely playgrounds: Hřiště Vozovna , the one behind the Bistro Artyčok, and a new playground Lanové hřiště Výstaviště.

#4 Prague Zoo 

The Prague Zoo is one of the best in Europe, with a wide variety of animals and interactive exhibits. It's an excellent place for a family outing. I couldn't recommend this attraction for kids highly enough. Prague Zoo is a fantastic place that we love deeply.

#5 National Technical Museum 

This museum has a variety of interactive exhibits showcasing the history of technology, transportation, and industry, making it attractive for kids of all ages. It is a fascinating museum; the only drawback is that it is not interactive, so kids cannot touch and explore the objects.

Pro tip: Next to the NTP is an agricultural museum, where you can go to the rooftop and enjoy another fantastic view of Prague.

#6 National Museum of Prague

The National Museum is a fascinating and recently renovated place that now offers interactive and engaging exhibitions for children. The museum features displays of dinosaurs, fossils, minerals, and various animal species.

Kids can learn about the Earth's history and the evolution of life and even get a glimpse into ancient civilizations. The museum has interactive exhibits that make learning fun and educational for young visitors, making it an excellent choice for a family outing in Prague.

#7 Czech Puppetry

Prague has a long history of puppetry. You can attend a puppet show, visit the Museum of Puppetry, or even find puppet shops where kids can see and buy traditional Czech puppets.

#10 Prague Market

Explore the bustling Prague Market, where you'll encounter an array of local products, crafts, and delicious street food. Kids can sample traditional Czech and Slovak pastry.

In summer, local farmers sell fantastic ice cream from the best-quality cow and goat milk. The vibrant atmosphere and diverse offerings make it a fun and culturally enriching experience for the whole family.

Pro tip: We love the sushi from a Japanese cook who sells salmon and tuna sushi every Saturday in the Prague market. His sushi is very simple but so good; it is definitely one of the best sushi you can find in Prague. However, they are popular among locals and go very fast, so be sure to get to the market early, no later than 10 am, at pavilion #22.

One of the things we really appreciate about Prague is the wealth of wooded areas right here in the city, making it easy to connect with nature without having to venture too far.
If you're weary of all the sightseeing and crowds and are looking to get some fresh air, enjoy some active exercise, or even a bike ride, here are our top trail recommendations for you and your kids.

1. Divoká Šárka

Divoká Šárka is a nature reserve located just outside Prague (not far from the airport), known for its stunning landscapes and natural beauty. The hiking trails wind through a rugged canyon, providing a sense of adventure for families.

Kids can enjoy splashing in the refreshing streams, discovering hidden caves, and encountering diverse wildlife in this wild and enchanting setting.

2. Kunratický Les

Kunratický Les, or Kunratice Forest, offers a tranquil hiking experience in a wooded area near Prague. The trails are well-maintained and suitable for families with young hikers.

As you explore, you'll find serene ponds, peaceful groves, and an opportunity to spot various bird species. It's an ideal spot for a relaxing walk in nature, allowing families to escape the city's hustle and bustle without traveling far.

Pro tip: This trail is likely the simplest to reach. All you have to do is head to the Roztyly metro station, then take the exit on the right side. Just follow the paved path, and you'll find yourself in the forest a mere 20 meters from the station. There are several lovely playgrounds for kids in the forest, but remember the tick spray if the weather is warm.

3. Prokopské and Dalejské Údolí

Prokopské a Dalejské Údolí, or Prokop and Dalej Valleys, offer a picturesque hiking experience for families. This scenic trail takes you through lush forests, meandering streams, and past unique rock formations.

With well-marked paths and gentle terrain, it's a perfect choice for a family-friendly hike, allowing kids to connect with nature while exploring the beautiful Czech countryside.

Průhonice

Průhonice boasts a stunning UNESCO-listed castle and park. Explore the picturesque gardens, including a beautiful pond, where kids can feed the ducks or colorful carp. It's an excellent spot for a family walk or a picnic.

Botanikus Ostrá

BOTANICUS Craft Center and Herbal Gardens offer a delightful blend of nature and traditional crafts.

Located near Prague, this enchanting destination lets kids explore lush herbal gardens, learn about traditional crafts, and engage in hands-on activities like pottery, candle- and soap-making, and even old techniques of paper-making.

It's an educational and immersive experience that allows families to connect with nature while discovering the artistry of centuries-old trades.

Mirakulum

Mirakulum is an adventure park designed for kids of all ages. It features playgrounds, swings, mazes, water activities, and a petting zoo, providing hours of entertainment and active fun.

Farmapark Soběhrdy

At Farmapark Soběhrdy, families can immerse themselves in the farm life experience. Interact with animals, take pony rides, and enjoy various farm-themed activities. Farmapark is a very well-maintained and picturesque place that the whole family will enjoy together.

Chocotopia

Here, they can discover how chocolate is crafted, get creative by making their own sugary delights, and savor mouthwatering chocolate treats. Plus, there's a cozy little indoor playground to let off steam after enjoying all those sweet delights.

Vyhlídka Maj (Maj Viewpoint)

Vyhlídka Maj is a breathtaking viewpoint that provides sweeping panoramic vistas of the picturesque Czech countryside. A brief hike leads to this captivating spot, offering families the chance to revel in the region's natural splendor.

While it's a popular destination among locals, it often goes undiscovered by tourists. However, please be aware that this viewpoint can be somewhat challenging to locate, and it poses some safety concerns for families with small children since there are no barriers or protective measures in place to prevent accidental falls from the cliff.

Mělník

The town of Mělník is known for its historic castle and vineyards. Take a tour of the castle, walk through the picturesque town, and enjoy wine tasting (for adults) while taking in the serene surroundings.

Additionally, don't miss the smaller Mělník ossuary, which, while less ornate than the famous one in Kutná Hora, is a truly unique and special stop. So, if you happen to be in Mělník, it's definitely worth your time to explore.

The Sedlec Ossuary

The Sedlec Ossuary, found below the Church of All Saints in Kutná Hora, is an intriguing yet somewhat eerie destination. Children will be fascinated by the intricate bone decor and can delve into the history of this peculiar spot, often nicknamed the "Bone Church." 

Additionally, nearby, there's a cozy little Lego museum and a Lego café where kids can relax and enjoy some Lego brick playtime, giving parents a chance to unwind as well.

Karlštejn Castle

Karlštejn Castle is a picturesque medieval fortress situated in a scenic countryside setting.

Karlstejn Castle holds great significance for the Czech people, and it's a significant Gothic fortress established in 1348 by King Charles IV. It played a crucial role in safeguarding the Imperial Regalia, Bohemian Crown Jewels, and royal treasures. 

Although it's a must-see destination and among the country's most renowned castles, please remember that it's perched atop a steep hill, making it challenging for families with strollers and young children to access.

Konopiště Castle

Konopiště Castle is known for its beautiful architecture and extensive gardens. Families can explore the castle's ornate interiors while learning about its fascinating history.

The gardens offer a great place for kids to run around and play. Don't forget to visit the Castle's Stables, where children can admire horses and take pony rides during certain times of the year.

Loučeň Castle

Loučeň Castle is a charming Baroque estate with lovely gardens and a hedge maze. Families can take leisurely walks in the manicured gardens and try to find their way through the maze.

The castle often hosts family-friendly events and activities, so check their schedule for special programs or themed tours that might interest kids.

Křivoklát Castle

Just a short journey from Prague, Křivoklát Castle offers a fantastic day trip for families. This historic castle, dating back to the 13th century, captivates with its Gothic palaces, intriguing dungeons, and regal halls.

You can get here by car in around 1 hour. However, a longer but scenic train ride along the Berounka River adds to the adventure, making the journey as enjoyable as the destination.

Kids will be thrilled by the castle's medieval charm and the surrounding natural beauty, perfect for exploring or enjoying a family picnic. With its rich blend of history and picturesque landscapes, Křivoklát Castle is an ideal escape for a family day out.

Stunning Castles of the South Bohemian Region

České Budějovice

České Budějovice, also known as Budweis in German, is a charming city located in southern Bohemia. It is famous for its well-preserved historic center, picturesque town square, and beautiful Renaissance and Baroque architecture.

Families can explore the city's rich history, visit the stunning Black Tower for panoramic views, and enjoy a stroll along the scenic Malše River.

Hluboká nad Vltavou

Hluboká nad Vltavou is a fairy-tale-like town renowned for its impressive Hluboká Castle. This stunning Neo-Gothic castle, resembling England's Windsor Castle, is a highlight of the area.

Families can tour the castle's opulent interiors, stroll through the manicured gardens, and enjoy picturesque views of the Vltava River valley.

Český Krumlov

Český Krumlov is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed town that looks like it's been plucked from a storybook. Its medieval charm is characterized by winding cobblestone streets, a castle perched on a hill, and the meandering Vltava River.

Families can explore the Český Krumlov Castle, take a rafting trip on the river, and immerse themselves in the town's rich history and cultural events. It's a captivating destination with something for everyone.

Pro tip: Both castles are just a short car ride away from České Budějovice, making this town a convenient base for exploring all these landmarks.

While Český Krumlov is undeniably beautiful, its hotel rates can be pricey during the tourist season. Fortunately, more affordable and family-friendly lodging choices in the vicinity of Český Krumlov offer comfort and convenience.

For families with kids looking for a summer stay, we recommend the Villa Resort & Organic Spa in České Budějovice. We personally stayed there and found the stay to be the perfect blend of relaxation and excitement from exploring local landmarks.

The resort is nestled in a park, and the historic center of České Budějovice is within walking distance. Český Krumlov is just a quick 25-minute drive away, and Hluboká nad Vltavou is only a 15-minute ride from the resort.

Other Castles to Explore Near České Budějovice

If your family is eager to visit numerous castles, the České Budějovice region is an ideal destination. While these castles may be less renowned among tourists, they are highly treasured by locals.

Within a short drive from České Budějovice, you can explore the charming castles in Třeboň (30 minutes away by car), Červená Lhota Castle (a 40-minute drive), or the impressive castle in Jindřichův Hradec, which ranks as the third-largest in size, following only Prague and Český Krumlov castles.

Lipno Lake: South Bohemia's Ultimate Family Getaway!

Just an hour's drive from České Budějovice, you'll find the town of Lipno nad Vltavou, nestled near the Lipno Dam on the Vltava River, forming the expansive Lipno Reservoir, the largest in the Czech Republic.

Known for its stunning natural beauty and offering a wide array of outdoor activities, it's a top spot for tourists and outdoor enthusiasts. Plus, there are plenty of family-friendly attractions that your kids are sure to enjoy:

1. Treetop Walkway: An observation deck and tower providing a unique perspective of the surrounding nature. It also features a fun slide down from the walkway, offering a bumpy but exciting ride.

2. Lipno Dam (Vodni Nadrz Lipno): This dam offers beautiful nature and a lake, making it a relaxing spot for a family outing.

3. Czech Repubrick: A specialty museum that was the site of the first LEGO World Cup building Championship in 1988, making it an inspirational place for Lego enthusiasts.

4. Ski Areal Lipno nad Vltavou: Touted as one of the best ski resorts in the Czech Republic, especially for kids, with about 1000m long slopes.

5. Slideland Bobová Dráha Lipno: An exciting game and entertainment center with a thrilling track that offers a fun ride and spectacular views, particularly enjoyed by kids.

6. Forest Kingdom Lipno: A zipline and aerial adventure park offering thrilling activities for the more adventurous families.

7. Noe's Sailing: Offers boat tours where you can either relax and enjoy the ride or try your hand at steering the boat under the guidance of a captain.

Liberec Region

Just a short one-and-a-half-hour drive from Prague, you'll find the quaint town of Liberec. This charming small town boasts several attractions that are a hit with kids and equally enjoyed by adults.

Liberec Zoo

As the oldest zoo in the Czech Republic, Zoo Liberec provides an engaging experience for children of all ages. It's home to over 170 species, including rare animals like white tigers and red pandas, making it a fantastic place for kids to learn about wildlife and conservation. 

The zoo's stroller-friendly layout offers interactive exhibits, play areas, and educational talks, ensuring a fun and informative day out for the entire family.

We were totally amazed by the animals' behavior at this zoo. It was unlike anything we've ever seen.

They were so active and even playful, like giraffes running around in silly circles playing with each other, lions cuddling and roaring, and monkeys actually interacting with our kids through the glass wall.

We guess this zoo doesn't get as crowded as the Prague zoo, so the animals feel less overwhelmed and more comfortable. We can't recommend this zoo enough – it was an incredible experience.

IQ Landia

This science center is a paradise for curious minds. With its interactive exhibits focused on various aspects of science and technology, IQ Landia stimulates young imaginations and encourages learning through play. 

Exhibits include intriguing hands-on physics, biology, and astronomy activities designed to engage children while educating them. It's an ideal spot for fostering a love for science in kids, offering an entertaining break from traditional sightseeing.

Ještěd 

Dominating the region's skyline, Ještěd is a unique architectural marvel that doubles as a television transmitter and a hotel. For families, the journey to the top via cable car is an adventure, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area. 

Once at the summit, kids can enjoy the excitement of being high above the ground and explore the mountain's trails. In winter, Ještěd transforms into a ski paradise, with slopes catering to various skill levels, including beginners.

Pro tip: The highly popular Babylon Aquapark is a go-to for many tourists. However, from our personal experience, we don't believe it's worth the visit.

Things to Do in the Czech Republic with Family in Winter

#1 Skiing in Krkonoše Mountains  

Located only a 2.5-hour drive from Prague, Krkonoše Mountains is a cherished destination for Czech families and tourists during the winter season.

Because of their proximity to the capital city and popularity, these mountains may not be as budget-friendly as you'd expect, and accommodations tend to fill up fast. Be sure to plan your stay well in advance to secure your spot.

The Most Popular Ski Resorts in Krkonoše Mountains

Špindlerův Mlýn

One of the most popular ski resorts in the Krkonoše Mountains, Špindlerův Mlýn offers a range of slopes suitable for all skill levels, including children. It has ski schools and rental shops, making it an excellent choice for families. It is a beautiful place, where we've been many times and love it dearly.

Pec pod Sněžkou

Located near the highest peak in the Czech Republic, Sněžka, Pec pod Sněžkou provides a family-friendly atmosphere with ski schools and gentle slopes perfect for beginners and kids.

Harrachov 

This charming town is known for its ski jumping history and has ski resorts catering to families. The Harrachov Ski Resort offers slopes ideal for children and beginners.

Rokytnice nad Jizerou

Rokytnice nad Jizerou boasts the largest ski resort in the Krkonoše Mountains, offering various slopes for different skill levels. It's family-friendly and has ski schools with experienced instructors.

#2 Thermal Spas

Unwind in thermal spas like Karlovy Vary or Mariánské Lázně, renowned for their therapeutic waters. Personally, we found Karlovy Vary to be more vibrant and developed compared to Mariánské Lázně. Families visit here for a peaceful ambiance, indulging in one of the many spa hotels dotting the historic center.

Kids can have a blast swimming in pools, soaking in hot tubs, and even trying out mild saunas. Additionally, several ski resorts in the Karlovy Vary region allow you to combine relaxation with some physical winter activities.

#3 Christmas Markets 

Discovering Christmas markets in the Czech Republic is a delightful family experience during the holiday season.

From the enchanting Prague Christmas Markets set against historic cityscapes to Brno Christmas Market with a massive Ferris wheel to the charming Český Krumlov Market with its backdrop of an ancient castle, these markets offer a range of activities for kids.

Enjoy festive decorations, local crafts, and delicious treats.

#4 Christmas in Castles 

During winter, certain castles and historical sites host enchanting candlelight tours that evoke a magical ambiance. We also suggest visiting before Christmas to witness the castles adorned with fabulous holiday decorations and special programs, taking the Christmas spirit to a whole new level.

#5 Indoor Water Parks

In the Czech Republic, several indoor water parks are ideal for family fun, especially during winter. 

In our experience, the best are AquaPalace in Prague, recognized as the largest water park in Central Europe, and the fantastic Aqualand Moravia, located in a beautiful place 15 minutes from the Austrian border and close to several great places to visit, like Mikulov Castle and Lednice–Valtice Cultural Landscape.

#6 Cultural Experiences with Kids

Prague offers a diverse selection of theater performances tailored for children, including enchanting fairy tales, lively musicals, and graceful ballets.

Two highly anticipated ballets that grace the stage every winter are "The Nutcracker" and "Swan Lake," beloved by kids.

While you might initially worry about your children getting bored, you'll be pleasantly surprised by how captivated and excited they become by the beautiful music and graceful dancing. 

To ensure a great view, consider securing good seats well in advance. These ballets are incredibly popular among locals and tourists, and tickets sell out quickly. These shows offer a fantastic way to enjoy a winter afternoon indoors with your family.
